The World Is Not Enough

The world is not enough But it is such a perfect place to start, my love And if you’re strong enough Together we can take the world apart, my love The world is not enough The world is not enough No Nowhere near enough, The world is not enough… (Song by the band Garbage)

That’s How You Make Candy Floss!

Remember the candy floss you enjoyed in your childhood? Well, I sure do, and this was my first time to see it getting prepared right in front of me! As you can see, there is a hollow basin that spots a burner in the center. Inside the burner, sugar, butter and artificial color is added. As the burner…

Save Meeeee!

OK, I am seriously at loss of words for this one, this sweet little thing has sat pretty, unattached in my media list. So I though, might as well bring her out in the open. I found this goat trying to run away and hide before he/she got caught and slaughtered for Gatari, the last…

And The King Goes Back Home…

After 10 days of festivities on Anantha Chaturdashi the King, or Lord Ganesha undertakes his journey back home, through the sea, as devotees take part  in the immersion festivities with a lot of pomp and fanfare. While we thank god for his kindness, generosity and his blessing, and urge him to come back soon the following year….

Bringing the Sanctity Home

While we don’t bring home an Idol of Lord Ganesha, being Brahmans, we do have Ganapati pooja at home. While we don’t use the idols of the temple at home, we make a statue out of turmeric and chant mantras to the make shift idol. A day after the pooja, we dissolve the heap of…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Textured

Like I mentioned before, I don’t appreciate the act of quarrying. I got this shot on a weekend getaway to a local hill station called Malshej Ghat. It is the perfect time of the year to visit the place, but considering the foggy mist and the rain kissed skies, you do find a lot of waterfalls,…

Home-made Savories

For Ganesh Charurthi, we Tamilians make the Lords favorite delicacy called modak at home, as a part of the Prasad or blessings from the God. These are sweet dumplings made from rice flour, filled with coconut shreds, and jaggery seasoned with elaichi (cardamom powder). Needless to say, mom’s a fantastic cook, and despite not having a sweet-tooth, I…

He Comes Home

I have lost patience with the stories I guess, so instead of mythology, let me tell you about the Elephant-Head God that paid a visit to my building. Like most other housing societies in Mumbai, mine too brings an idol of the God with a lot of pomp and fanfare. However, the joy is short-lived…

Lessons from life

Kubera is considered the God of Wealth as per Hindu mythology. Known to be excessively proud of his immense fortunes, the god once decided to throw a lavish meal to his godly guests Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati. The couple politely denied the request, instead offered to send their son young Ganesha instead, to which Kubera…

Mummy’s Boy

About the picture: I got this idol as a wedding gift from my librarian, who brought it for me all the way from Mathura. The idol of Shiva and Parvati with Ganesha on their lap, sits proudly in the temple at my house. I share a special bond with Komal Ma’am, she was the first person to not just recommend books to me, but also get my feedback after I returned it to her in due course. How I miss my fun-filled college days!

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati had two sons, Lord Ganesha and Lord Karthikeya (Murugan). While both were very loved, the gods were puzzled over who was smarter. They went out to Bhrama, the creator of the Universe to get an answer, but […]
