The Princely Problem

As a part of my college syllabus, I came across the lovely story called The Princes by author Manohar Malgonkar. Being royalty himself,  Malgonkar was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Maratha Light Infantry,a big game hunter, a civil servant, a mine owner and a farmer. The story deals with the the state of Indian Royals after Indian colonization, the build-up to Indian independence and its aftermath. During the rein of the first and only woman PM of India, the wallet to Indian Royals was cut short, but they continue to live the famed life of princely high. A friend’s wedding in Bhopal, and the furniture there reminded me of the poignant story.
