Democracy, Really?

India adopted the Constitution on 26th January, 1950, and we celebrate that day as the Republic Day with much fanfare. The Constitution declares India to be a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic that promises its citizens justice, equality, and liberty along with promoting brotherhood among them. The annual parade at Delhi is a show of how potent our armed forces are, and the President tells us about the progress of the nation. But as Indians, do we feel equality, security and a sense of belonging? Politics aside, as the young breed of the nation struggles to come to terms with adult grief and cultural shocks, here is hoping that we leave the world a more tolerant place to be in for the kids who will follow our footsteps. Jai Hind!

Ishwar Allah (Movie: 1947 Earth )

Ishwar Allah Tere Jahan Mein
Nafrat Kyoon Hai, Jung Hai Kyoon
Tera Dil To, Itna Bada Hai
Insaan Ka Dil Tang Hai Kyoon

Oh God, in your world,
Why is there hatred, and war?
When you have such a big heart,
Why are humans so small-hearted?

Kadam Kadam Par Sarhad Kyoon Hai
Saari Zameen Jo Teri Hai
Suraj Ke Pherey Karti Hai
Phir Kyoon Itni Andheri Hai
Is Duniya Ke Daaman Par
Insaan Ke Lahoo Ka Rang Hai Kyoon

Why are there boundaries at every second step?
When the entire land belongs to you!
It (The Earth) revolves around the Sun,
Then why is there so much darkness?
Why is the dignity of this world stained,
With the color of human blood?

Ishwar Allah, Tere Jahan Mein
Nafrat Kyoon Hai, Jung Hai Kyoon
Tera Dil To, Itna Bada Hai
Insaan Ka Dil Tang Hai Kyoon…

Goonj Rahi Hain Kitni Cheekhain
Pyaar Ki Baatein Kaun Sooney
Toot Rahe Hain Kitney Sapnay
In Ke Tukde Kaun Chuney
Dil Ke Darwazoon Par Taaley
Taalon Par Ye Zang Hai Kyoon

With so many screams echoing,
Who can hear the sounds of love?
With so many dreams being shattered?
Who will pick up their pieces?
The doors of hearts all sport locks,
But why do these locks have a rust?

Ishwar Allah, Tere Jahan Mein
Nafrat Kyoon Hai, Jung Hai Kyoon
Tera Dil To, Itna Bada Hai
Insaan Ka Dil Tang Hai Kyoon…
