Butter lamps are a well-known feature of the Tibetan Buddhist temples and monasteries. While the lamps traditionally burn using yak butter, they now use oil or Ghee. In buddhist culture, they stand for “the illumination of wisdom”. Since these monks are displaced from Tibet and now live in Coorg, the monastery sees a large amount of butter lamps together in memory of their sacred land. The Root Tantra of Chakrasamvara further adds, “If you wish for sublime realization, offer hundreds of lights”. I love the calm and soothing effect that the picture has to offer in any case!

Oh yes! Love this photo. I have a long time interest in things Tibetan, and the idea of butter lamps was always intriguing. And here you are showing them, and lo! they are equally intriguing in reality.

Thanks Judith! It quite a surprise to discover the place, i have been to Manali and Nainital which are Buddhist hubs of sort, but it is a beautiful and peaceful experience…after 3 good month, i finally shared the pictures!
