Mehandi, or Heena as it is called forms an integral part of all auspicious ceremonies. One look at the pattern, and you can figure out what is the occasion and which Indian region the lady belongs to; South Indian patters are more geometric in designs, while that in western India spots human figures. The patterns up north seems to have a more Mughal flavor. This pattern was drawn on my palm for my wedding. Looking at the cosmopolitan setting that Mumbai offers, as a Southie, my palms saw heena patterned in the Mughal designs. As long as the colors last, and it looks pretty, you won’t hear me complaining!
P.S.: The title is in Hindi, roughly translated as “Write the Color as Heena!” A bit too crude as far as translations go, but goes well with the picture, I thought; so I didn’t bother correcting it for grammar.

Does it hurt when they’re doing the henna patterns? I always wondered how it would feel — more like painting, or like tattooing?

its like line painting and its not permenant. more like a dye that lasts 15-20 days. its a wet paste Judith so it doesnt hurt, just flakes away 🙂
