While there are billions of people following Hinduism, it is not a religion per se, it is a doctrine of Dharmas, that suggest ways of living a righteous life. What that ideally translates to is that we have several Gods and goddesses whose stories help us make difficult choices. Hindus havent really seen god, (I mean, as opposed to the Buddhists, Jains and Christians, who have reference points). So thanks to mythology, we have descriptions, and the creative genius came up with visual connotations, an opportunity for us Hindus to find and know about God. A good opportunity for me to thank God for all the wonderful people I loved, some I lost, some I am still holding on to!

As always, interesting and informative.
In my understanding, Buddhists do not “see” God, as, for instance, Christianity has it. The Buddha is not God, in that sense. The use of multiple gods and goddesses in Hinduism must be a very great source of strength and insight for people. I think the gods and goddesses in ancient Greece were supposed to have functioned in much the same way: different aspects of life, different sources of wisdom and power.
A paragraph from the Chandogya Upanishads accompanied me (written in my small notebook) daily for years and years of my life —

This is a great shot. I love the textures in the statue that you have captured so well. At this time I am thinking of my Hindu neighbour who suffered a stroke last year – I hope that he and his family will have a good Diwali and I wish the same to you and your family.
