Lessons from life

Kubera is considered the God of Wealth as per Hindu mythology. Known to be excessively proud of his immense fortunes, the god once decided to throw a lavish meal to his godly guests Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati. The couple politely denied the request, instead offered to send their son young Ganesha instead, to which Kubera proudly declared that he can feed a hundred children like Ganesha. Disgusted by his pompousness, the boy decided to teach him a good lesson. As it is customary in Hindu cultures, guests are fed till they are completely satiated. However, the child seemed insatiable! After he emptied the entire granary at Kuber’s palace, he gobbled up all the plates, utensils and furniture in Kubera’s Alakapuri city. When there was nothing left, Kubera offered himself on the plate. He begged Shiva for forgiveness after which, he offered his son a handful of grains that satiated his instantly. The lesson here is that anything that comes to you with love and grace is always received better than actions done in vain.

About the picture: This idol is place in the building where my mother lives and brings back a lot of fond childhood memories. As I part today, I would like to wish everyone a happy teacher’s day, as we celebrate the birthday of our first Vice President of India Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan also known as Dr. S Radhakrishnan.
